The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) recently organized a specialized training program for the field staff of Jharkhand Foundation Kendra, Bokaro, focusing on the use of satellite technology for data collection of Kharif and Rabi crops at Bhubasware. This initiative marks an important step toward integrating advanced digital tools into grassroots agricultural practices in Odisha. During the training, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of remote sensing, satellite imagery interpretation, and ground truthing methods. The sessions highlighted how satellite data can be effectively used for crop mapping, monitoring growth stages, assessing stress conditions, and yield forecasting. Practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises allowed field staff to gain confidence in using these modern tools for real-time data collection and analysis.

Experts from IRRI emphasized that the adoption of satellite-based crop monitoring systems can significantly enhance decision-making in agriculture, reduce manual errors, and improve the efficiency of extension services. By harnessing these technologies, the Jharkhand Foundation Kendra field teams will be better equipped to provide farmers with timely advisories, helping them manage resources efficiently and adapt to challenges such as climate variability.

Sustainable Agricultural https://blog.jharkhandfoundationkendra.org/2024/10/17/sustainable-agricultural/ https://blog.jharkhandfoundationkendra.org/2024/10/17/sustainable-agricultural/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2024 08:00:18 +0000 https://blog.jharkhandfoundationkendra.org/?p=25

In a world increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of our actions, sustainable agriculture stands out as a beacon of hope. In this context, Jharkhand Foundation Kendra (JFK) is pleased to work with the initiative of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) South Asia region Varanasi in their project titled “Rice-Fallow mapping in four states of Eastern India Project under MoA & FW ”. Currently, IRRI is mapping rice fallows in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal using Geo-spatial data (Sentinel-1 SAR, Landsat-8/9 OLI satellite data) for the Kharib and Rabi seasons. In this project, JFK is conducting a field campaign for the rice area mapping to acquire quality signatures of rice and non-rice fields typical of the region of interest (Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal). With the help of this field campaign, they empower farmers with the knowledge and tools to transition to more sustainable practices. JFK is dedicated to reshaping farming practices for a greener, healthier future.

The Geospatial Mapping for Rice and Rice Fellow Program by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is a specialized training initiative designed to build expertise in geospatial technologies as applied to rice agriculture. This program uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and data analytics to improve rice cultivation practices, optimize land use, and support food security. The team JFK attended this training program at IRRI Varanasi Center. This empowers a new generation of agricultural leaders to use data-driven insights and spatial technologies to address the pressing challenges facing rice farmers globally. Through a blend of technical training, hands-on experience, and mentorship, fellows are prepared to contribute to the future of sustainable agriculture.
